How to Use Actives When You Have Sensitive Skin

Without Wrecking Your Skin Barrier

Azelaic acid, retinoids, exfoliants, benzoyl peroxide + more — active ingredients can make a huge difference in your skin, but when you have sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin, how you introduce them matters just as much as which active you choose.

Sensitive skin doesn't mean you can't use actives. It means we need to be a little more strategic about what you're using, how often you're using it, and what the rest of your routine looks like.

Here’s how I approach it.

1. Build Your Foundation First

Before adding actives, make sure your basic routine is covered:

If your routine hasn't been particularly barrier-focused, give your skin 1–2 weeks with the basics first before introducing something new. These are our favorite Skin Essentials.

This is especially important if your skin is already feeling dry, tight, irritated, unusually red, or reactive.

Your actives can't do their best work if your skin is constantly inflamed.

2. Pick the Right Active for What You're Actually Trying to Treat

You don't need every trending active. You need the right active for your skin concern.

Redness + rosacea → Azelaic acid
Helps target redness, inflammation, and bumps while generally being well tolerated by sensitive skin.

Anti-aging + acne → Retinoid
Helps improve fine lines, texture, breakouts, and discoloration.

Inflamed breakouts + acne rosacea → Benzoyl peroxide
Helps target acne-causing bacteria and inflammatory breakouts.

Congestion + sebaceous filaments → Salicylic acid
Oil-soluble, so it can get into oily pores and help clear buildup.

Dullness + uneven texture → LHA/PHA
Gentler resurfacing options that can help exfoliate and brighten without immediately reaching for a stronger acid.

The goal isn't to build a routine with the most actives possible. It's to identify your main concern and choose the ingredient that actually makes sense for it.

3. Don't Get Active-Happy

Start with ONE.

Sensitive skin usually doesn't need no actives — it needs the right active introduced the right way.

Choose a gentle but effective formula and start slowly. Throwing a retinoid, exfoliant, azelaic acid, and acne treatment into your routine at the same time isn't going to get you results faster.

More ≠ faster results.

Stronger ≠ better

4. Buffer Your Active First

When introducing a new active, try:

Cleanse → Hydrate → ACTIVE → Moisturize

Applying your active over your hydrator can help buffer it while your skin adjusts.

Once your skin is comfortable with the product, you may be able to move the active underneath your hydrators if appropriate for that particular formula.

This is one of my favorite ways to make potentially irritating ingredients more approachable for sensitive skin.

5. Start Slow + Build

If you're very sensitive, start every 2–3 days. With the right routine and the right active, though, most can start with every other day.

As your skin acclimates and everything feels comfortable, consider a boost about every two weeks if your skin needs it.

A boost could mean:

→ Increasing frequency
→ Moving your active earlier in your routine
→ Adding another active

But here's the important part:

Only make ONE change at a time.

Your skin needs time to adjust, even when things are going well.

6. Listen to Your Skin

A little dryness while acclimating can happen.

But burning, persistent stinging, significant redness, or major discomfort isn't proof that your skincare is “working.”

If your skin starts feeling overwhelmed:

→ Scale back your active
→ Give your skin a rest day to recover + rebuild
→ Add another hydrator to your routine for extra support
→ Look at what else could be pushing your skin too far — too many actives, excessive frequency, layering actives, or applying them to damp skin can all increase irritation

There are no strict rules with skincare.

Listen to your skin.

Sensitive Skin CAN Use Actives

Having sensitive or rosacea-prone skin doesn't mean you're sentenced to cleanser and moisturizer forever.

You can still target acne, redness, pigmentation, texture, and signs of aging.

The trick is creating a strong foundation, choosing actives based on what your skin actually needs, introducing them strategically, and building from there.

Stronger isn't always better.

The best routine is the one your skin can tolerate consistently enough to actually get results from.
