You're buying good skincare.
You're staying consistent.
You're avoiding your triggers.
You're trying really hard.
So...
Why isn't your skin getting better?
This is one of the biggest frustrations I hear from new clients.
More often than not, it isn't because you're using the "wrong" products.
It's because one (or a few) important pieces of the puzzle are missing.
Let's walk through some of the biggest reasons I see.
1. Your Barrier Isn't Strong Enough
Your skin barrier is the foundation of healthy skin.
When it's compromised, everything becomes harder.
Your skin becomes more reactive.
Inflammation increases.
Products sting.
Breakouts linger.
And the results you're hoping for either slow down—or your skin can actually start getting worse.
Even the best skincare has a harder time working because your skin isn't in a healthy enough place to respond.
Sometimes the answer isn't another active ingredient.
It's giving your barrier more support.
That's exactly why I always start with Phase 1. A strong foundation allows everything else in your routine to work better.
2. You're Using Too Many Actives
When your skin isn't improving, it's tempting to think...
"Maybe I need something stronger."
So you add another exfoliant.
Another acne treatment.
Another serum.
But more isn't always better.
Too many active ingredients can overwhelm your barrier, increase inflammation, and actually slow your progress.
Healthy skin responds better to treatment.
Inflamed skin struggles.
If you've continued increasing your actives and your skin still isn't improving, it may be time to shift your focus away from correction and back toward calming inflammation and rebuilding your barrier.
3. Your Products Are in the Wrong Order
Sometimes it isn't the products.
It's the order you're using them.
As a general rule, skincare should be applied from the thinnest consistency to the thickest.
Hydrating mists and toners.
Serums.
Moisturizers.
Facial oils.
SPF during the day.
Applying your products in the correct order helps them absorb properly and gives each product the best chance to do its job.
4. You're Switching Routines Too Often
This is such a common one.
You use a new product for two weeks.
You don't see dramatic results.
So you switch.
Then you switch again.
And again.
Skincare takes time.
Your skin needs consistency before you can truly judge whether something is working.
Constantly changing products often means you're never giving your skin the opportunity to improve.
5. You're Missing Phase 2
Many people spend months focusing only on calming and healing their skin.
And that's incredibly important.
But healing alone doesn't address every skin concern.
Once your barrier is healthy enough, you still need the right active ingredients to manage breakouts, congestion, excess oil, texture, pigmentation, and persistent redness.
That's where gentle corrective ingredients come in.
The magic happens when barrier support and correction work together.
Phase 1 + Phase 2 = long-term transformation.
6. You're Only Looking at Your Skincare
Sometimes your skincare isn't the problem at all.
Diet.
Hormones.
Stress.
Poor sleep.
Certain supplements.
Medications.
Gut health.
These can all influence your skin.
If your skincare routine is solid but your skin still isn't responding the way you'd expect, it may be worth taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.
7. You Haven't Given Your Skin Enough Time
This one is probably the hardest.
We all want quick results.
But healthy skin isn't built overnight.
Most routines need adjustments along the way.
Maybe your skin tolerated every-other-night use beautifully.
Now it's time to increase.
Maybe you've mastered Phase 1.
Now you're ready for Phase 2.
Skincare isn't static.
As your skin gets stronger, your routine should continue evolving with it.
Progress comes from small, thoughtful adjustments over time—not dramatic changes overnight.
Continue challenging your skin as it's ready, making gradual tweaks every couple of weeks when appropriate instead of expecting one routine to stay exactly the same forever.
8. Healing Isn't Linear
This might be the most important one.
Healing isn't a straight line.
Life happens.
Stress happens.
Travel happens.
Hormones happen.
Summer happens.
That doesn't mean you've failed.
It doesn't mean your skincare suddenly stopped working.
Stay consistent.
Keep supporting your skin.
Trust the process.
One bad week doesn't erase months of progress.
The Bottom Line
If your skin isn't improving, don't assume you need to throw your entire routine away.
Instead, ask yourself:
-
Is my barrier healthy?
-
Am I giving my products enough time?
-
Am I using the right products in the right order?
-
Is it time to introduce—or adjust—my active ingredients?
-
Are there internal factors that could be contributing?
Healthy skin rarely comes from one miracle product.
It comes from consistently making the right adjustments at the right time.
That's where lasting results happen.
